FAQ

HEIC to JPG questions, answered

What is HEIC and why convert it?

HEIC is Apple's default photo format on iPhone since iOS 11 — it's about half the size of JPG at the same quality. But Windows, older Macs and most online services still don't handle it. Converting to JPG fixes that universally.

How does this work without uploading my photos?

We use libheif compiled to WebAssembly. Your browser decodes the HEIC file locally, re-encodes it as JPG, and that's it. No server, no upload, no cloud. DevTools → Network will confirm.

What about HEIC videos (HEVC)?

This tool handles still photos only. Videos in HEVC/H.265 need a video-transcoding pipeline that doesn't run viably in-browser. Use HandBrake or VLC for those.

Will EXIF metadata (camera info, GPS) survive?

Not in this version — the libheif → canvas → JPG pipeline drops most metadata. That's privacy-positive for sharing (the GPS coords don't leak) but if you specifically need EXIF preserved, use a desktop converter like ImageMagick.

Why is the first conversion slower?

On the first run your browser downloads the libheif WebAssembly module (~3 MB). It then caches it for the rest of the session, so subsequent conversions are near-instant.
