The basics

Why site structure matters for SEO

What is site structure?

Site structure is the hierarchical organisation of pages on your website. A well-structured site has a clear homepage at the top, broad category pages below, and specific detail pages at the leaves. Good structure helps search engines crawl efficiently, distributes link authority through your site, and helps users find content quickly.

What problems does poor structure cause?

  • Orphan pages don't get indexed (Google can't find them)
  • Deep pages (>4 clicks from home) get less authority and rank lower
  • Inconsistent URLs confuse search engines and waste crawl budget
  • Missing sitemaps slow down indexing
  • Weak internal linking wastes the SEO value of pages you've already created

What does Google actually want?

Google's documentation explicitly recommends a logical hierarchy with related content grouped together, every important page reachable within a few clicks from the homepage, descriptive URLs that reflect structure, and a comprehensive XML sitemap. Our analyser checks all of these.

Behind the scenes

How it works

Step 1

Discover

We find your sitemap automatically by checking robots.txt, sitemap.xml, sitemap_index.xml and other common locations.

Step 2

Parse

We fetch and parse your full sitemap, including nested sitemap indexes (for sites with thousands of pages).

Step 3

Visualise

We build a hierarchical tree of your site based on URL structure, then render it interactively.

Step 4

Recommend

We compare your structure to SEO best practices and generate personalised fixes for your site.

We only fetch your public XML sitemap — we don't crawl your full site, log in, or store any data. Analysis happens on demand and is not saved.

Frequently asked questions

Everything we get asked about site structure analysis and the limits of sitemap-based tools.

What if my site doesn't have a sitemap?

We'll try common locations (/sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml, /sitemap) and parse your robots.txt to find one. If we still can't find a sitemap, we'll show you how to create one — XML sitemaps are essential for SEO and most CMS platforms (WordPress with Yoast, Shopify, Webflow) generate them automatically.

How accurate is the orphan page detection?

We detect "structural orphans" based on URL patterns and sitemap inclusion. To detect true orphan pages (pages with no incoming internal links anywhere on your site), you would need a full crawler. We surface that as a Pro feature in our consultation services.

Will this work for very large sites (10,000+ pages)?

Yes — we handle sitemap index files (sitemap_index.xml) which break big sitemaps into chunks. Sites with 50,000+ URLs may take 30-60 seconds to fully analyse. For sites over 100k URLs, we recommend our enterprise audit service.

Do you store my data?

No. The sitemap is fetched, parsed, analysed and discarded. Nothing is saved to our database. If you share the results URL with a colleague, your site URL is encoded in the link, but no analysis data is stored server-side.

What's the difference between this and Screaming Frog?

Screaming Frog is a desktop crawler that fetches every page on your site (slow, requires install, costs money for sites over 500 URLs). This tool uses your XML sitemap (instant, free, browser-based). It's lower-fidelity but solves the 80% case for free.

Can I export the visualisation?

Yes — PNG and SVG export are included. The SVG is useful for embedding the tree in a PDF report or client presentation.

How is the "Health Score" calculated?

We score across six dimensions: sitemap presence, max depth, orphan ratio, URL consistency, content distribution and parameter handling. Each dimension is weighted and combined into a 0-100 score. The methodology is documented in our help centre.

Why does my homepage show as so much bigger than other nodes?

Node size in the visualisation reflects relative importance. Your homepage receives the most internal-link authority, so it appears largest. This visualisation matches how Google likely sees your site's hierarchy.

Will using this hurt my site or get me penalised?

No — we only fetch your public sitemap.xml, which is the same request Googlebot makes constantly. There's no risk to your site.

What's next after I run this analysis?

Three options: (1) implement the recommendations yourself using our other free tools, (2) follow the "How to fix" guidance in each recommendation card, or (3) book a free 30-minute consultation and we will walk you through the priority fixes for your specific site.
