What this audit checks

Most free SEO tools check 5 things and call it an audit. This one runs 9 distinct categories of analysis using real APIs from Google, Mozilla, and the Internet Archive — no shortcuts, no fake numbers.

Performance

Lighthouse Performance score from Google PageSpeed Insights, plus Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, TBT).

Accessibility

Lighthouse Accessibility score. Catches contrast issues, missing alt text, form-field labelling, ARIA roles.

Best Practices

Lighthouse Best Practices score. Catches mixed content, deprecated APIs, console errors.

Mobile

Mobile-specific Lighthouse run — half your visitors are on phones, so this gets its own score.

On-Page SEO

Title length, meta description, H1 presence, heading hierarchy, word count, image alt text, internal linking, OG tags, schema markup.

Technical SEO

robots.txt, sitemap.xml, canonical tags, HTTPS, indexability, redirect chains.

Security headers

Live grade from Mozilla HTTP Observatory. CSP, HSTS, X-Frame-Options, Referrer-Policy, cookie security.

Domain age

First archived date via the Wayback Machine — a credibility signal Google still factors in.

HTML validation

W3C standards check (currently shows unavailable on some sites due to upstream rate limits — graceful fallback).

Why this audit beats most paid tools

Search "free SEO audit" and you will find dozens of tools that look helpful and deliver almost nothing. The overwhelming majority generate a scraped, templated report with no live API data behind it — colourful charts, an arbitrary score out of 100, and a hard email gate before you can see the detail. The numbers are decoration. The product is your email address.

This audit does the opposite. It calls Google's actual PageSpeed Insights API for Lighthouse scores and Core Web Vitals, Mozilla's real HTTP Observatory for the security-header grade, and the genuine Wayback Machine archive for domain age. These are the same data sources the expensive SaaS platforms query — there is no markup, no middle layer, and no invented figures. What you see is what Google and Mozilla actually return for your URL.

There is a commercial logic to giving this away, and we would rather be honest about it than pretend otherwise. A genuinely useful free tool means the prospects who eventually contact us arrive already informed — they have seen their scores, read the recommendations, and know roughly what needs doing. Smarter, pre-qualified conversations are worth far more to a consultancy than a list of harvested emails.

Consider what the same data costs elsewhere. SEMrush's Site Audit sits inside plans starting around £100 a month. Ahrefs' Site Audit is similar. Even Sitebulb, the value option, is about £15 a month. For checking a handful of URLs, paying a monthly SaaS subscription is wildly disproportionate — and none of those tools will hand you the underlying Google and Mozilla data any more directly than this page does, for free, with no account.

We will also be straight about the limits. This is a single-page audit, not a whole-site crawl — it analyses the exact URL you enter. It does not reliably render JavaScript-heavy single-page apps, because it reads server HTML rather than executing a full browser. And it does not include backlink data; link analysis is a genuinely different problem and a separate tool for it is on the roadmap. For one page, on real data, with no catch — this is as honest as a free audit gets.

How to read your results

Lighthouse scores (Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, Mobile)

Each Lighthouse score is colour-banded the way Google bands them: 0–49 is red, 50–89 is amber, and 90–100 is green. Red means a real problem worth fixing soon; amber means there is room to improve but nothing is on fire.

A score of 70 is not a failure — treat it as the target for your next sprint, not a verdict on your site. And expect your mobile scores to land roughly 10–20 points below desktop. That gap is normal: mobile is simulated on a slower CPU and network, and almost every site shows it.

On-Page and Technical SEO scores

These two scores are computed in-house from real checks against your page — title length, H1 count, heading hierarchy, schema markup, canonical tags, HTTPS, and more. They are not Lighthouse numbers; they are our own scoring of concrete, observable facts.

A low score here is almost always cheap to fix. Missing meta descriptions, a duplicate H1, or an absent canonical tag are minutes of work each, and they compound — clearing the easy wins often lifts this score 20–30 points in a single afternoon.

Security headers (letter grade)

Mozilla HTTP Observatory grades your response headers on an F-to-A+ scale. Most WordPress and off-the-shelf sites score C or D out of the box — not because they are insecure, but because hardening headers are simply not configured by default.

The good news is that this is one of the fastest wins available. Adding three or four headers — a Content-Security-Policy, HSTS, X-Content-Type-Options and a Referrer-Policy — through Cloudflare or your hosting panel can lift a C to an A in an afternoon.

Top recommendations

The recommendations panel is ordered by impact, not by how easy each item is. The first item is the change most likely to move your rankings or user experience, even if it takes more effort than something further down the list.

You do not need to do everything. If you action just the top three over a weekend, you will usually see a measurable change in your Lighthouse scores within a week — and that momentum makes the rest of the list far easier to tackle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the audit take?

Usually 10–30 seconds. The Google PageSpeed Insights call is the slow part — it runs a full Lighthouse pass on a real device profile. The on-page, security and domain checks complete in parallel, so the wait is mostly Google.

Do you store the URL or my data?

The audit runs server-side and the result is held in memory for about ten minutes so a refresh is instant. We do not write your URL to a database, sell it, or share it. If you opt in to an emailed report, your email goes only to us.

Why is one section showing "unavailable"?

Some upstream APIs rate-limit or bot-challenge automated requests. When that happens the audit degrades gracefully — the section shows "—" instead of a fake number, and the rest of the report is unaffected. Re-running a minute later often succeeds.

Can I audit my whole site at once?

Not with the free tool — it audits one URL per run. A full multi-page crawl with a prioritised execution roadmap is part of the consultancy. Run a few key pages here first, then book a call if you want the whole site covered.

How accurate are the Lighthouse scores?

They come straight from Google’s PageSpeed Insights API — the same Lighthouse engine built into Chrome DevTools. Lab scores naturally vary a few points between runs because they simulate a fixed device and network, so treat them as a reliable range rather than an exact figure.

Does Google use this same data?

Yes. PageSpeed Insights is Google’s own product, and Core Web Vitals — LCP, CLS, and interaction latency — are confirmed ranking signals. Improving the numbers in this report improves the numbers Google sees.

Will my results email me automatically?

Only if you ask. The audit displays on-screen by default. If you enter your email in the report panel, we send a copy and our team reviews it — otherwise nothing leaves your screen.

What's the difference between this and the SEO Maturity Quiz?

This audit is a technical snapshot of a single URL — scores, headers, on-page checks. The SEO Maturity Quiz is a strategic assessment of your whole SEO programme: process, content, links and reporting, ending with a custom 30-day action plan. Use the audit for "is this page healthy?" and the quiz for "where should we focus next?".
